Statement regarding the loss of Brazil’s National Museum to a devastating fire
Hands On! International would like to express our sorrow regarding the fire that devastated the National Museum of Brazil on 2 September. While we are relieved, nobody was injured, we mourn the loss of the largest natural history collection of South America and other invaluable collections of high scientific relevance.
We ask everyone who has visited the museum and taken photographs of the buildings and its objects to contribute to the Wikipedia Commons campaign or send them directly to local helpers. Preserving a visual memory of the lost objects and the historical buildings helps the Brazilian scientific community to regain access to vital fields of research. Submit your photos or show your solidarity by asking your colleagues to contribute.
